Alcoholism as a Disease, Not a Weakness

Alcoholism is a disease in which drinkers have lost the ability to control their drinking, leading to physical and mental harm and loss of ability to behave in a socially acceptable manner. Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, pathological condition that affects the nervous and digestive system, caused by the inability to stop drinking despite adverse consequences such as loss of job, family, and health. The disease is potentially fatal, however the most disturbing and debilitating part of alcoholism is the loss of self-respect, the possible job loss, and the toll it takes on the alcoholics family. There is also indication that there may be a genetic component with alcoholism.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence defines alcoholism as characterized by “impaired control over dinking…and distortions in thinking, most notably denial.” This means that for many alcoholics, they are unable to make a decision to stop drinking without the help of others.

Symptoms of the disease include but are not limited to sneaking drinks, lying about the amount consumed, irritability when alcohol is not available, mood swings, loss of appetite, a puffiness of the face, job loss and a high number of traffic tickets.

Family members need to develop an awareness of the disease and talk with the alcoholic. Most alcoholics are in denial and talking to the person about their disease can be very difficult. Choose a time when the person is sober. In addition, talking to the person after an alcoholic problem as occurred, such as a family argument, or a drunken driving ticket, for example, may be a good time to talk. Unfortunately waiting for a problem to occur from alcoholic behaviors can have serious consequences.

Family members coping with an alcoholic or addict can cause a great deal of stress in the family life. Therefore, there are support groups for Al-Alteen for children and teenagers. Al-Anon is for the spouse or loved one that has to cope with an alcoholic. These groups teach family members on how to cope with the alcoholic and process their emotions.

There are studies that want you to believe that alcoholism is not a disease. They are wrong. Alcoholism is a disease and while there is no cure, it is treatable. If it were not a disease, insurance companies would not pay for treatment.

The Basics of Starting Your Own Website

You will note from the title that this article is for the beginners. The very first thing to consider is what kind of software you will use. I admit, my personal favorite is Microsoft FrontPage. It is what is known as a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web site editor. It enables webmasters to create websites without knowing any HTML. Those of you who write HTML code like a second language will probably not care for it very much. The latest version, FrontPage 2003, has great improvements from the older versions, like the split screen which allows you to see the HTML code as you edit. Even if you don’t write your own code, the more familiar you are with HTML, the better off you will be. FrontPage 2003 also lets you do a find and replace over your entire site. So if you made a mistake or want to change a link that is on all one thousand pages of your site, all you have to do is find the code and do a mass replace. Microsoft offers a 30 day trial CD if you would like to try it for free. Another cool web page editor, Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, can be downloaded and used on a trial basis at Macromedia.com.

If you are on a tight budget, which I can definitely understand, then go to Download.com and search for WYSIWYG HTML. There are a lot of free trials for easy to use HTML editors. You have to look really hard, but you may even find a couple that are completely free. Just skimming through the list I found one for around $15. Of course, you definitely want to use the free trial before you buy any of these to make sure you are comfortable using the software and that it does what you want it to do.

HTML-Kit is a must for any aspiring webmaster. You can download a completely free copy at Download.com. HTML-Kit is not WYSIWYG at all, but if you start working with more advanced options like php, cgi, .htaccess, or any of the other many file extensions, you’ll need this one eventually.

If you are looking to practice a little with a small website for free then try Bravenet.com. You can get 1.5 GB of bandwidth and 50 MB disk space. This isn’t very much compared to a host you pay for, but it can help get you started if this is your first outing in web page development. If nothing else it’s great free practice for the real thing.

The next important thing to consider is the web host. There are a number of questions to ask yourself in looking for a web host, like cost, bandwidth, disk space, type of scripts that are allowed, etc. You might want to check out this article http://webmastertips.us/articles/webhosting/good-web-host.htm for a lot of great tips before putting down any money.

Tower of London . . . Grim History Set In Stone

I can never pass the Tower of London without shuddering for all the horror that took place behind its walls. People did not just have their heads lopped off - which must be something rather less than jolly. They were comprehensively tortured in ways that would make you faint to read about them. So although the Beefeaters all ex-non-commissioned officers in the forces - look jolly and benevolent and tell a good yarn, never forget that this place saw some of the most horrid events of English history. A history that was far from bloodless.

The Tower of London was home to every monarch from William the Conqueror - the Norman who took over the country in 1066 by hammering Harold on his horse at Hastings with an ‘andful of arrers in his eye as a popular poem of the last century would have it - to Henry the VIII in the 16th Century who started the tradition of getting involved with other women which is still shown by certain sections of the Royal family to this day.

The Tower has also been the site of the Royal Mint, has housed public records, the Royal Menagerie and the Royal observatory. It is arguably the most famous, well preserved historical building in the world.

William the Conqueror started work on it three months after he arrived in 1066 and the Great Tower - later to become the White Tower when Henry III had the light stone which had been imported from Caen whitewashed - was built to let the Anglo-Saxon people know there was a new sheriff in town.

Initially it was earth and timber - there were stone walls still standing from the old Roman town of Londinium Augusta and they helped form a foundation.

In fact, John Stow in his epic ‘A Survey of London’, first published in 1598, refers to this although he says there is no documentary proof to support the theory.

But at the least you could say it is very probable that a fort of some kind has been there since the Roman Times and that at least some of the stones in the wall date from those times.

To this was added The Great Tower, now The White Tower and this is where the king moved in as a full time resident. The castle was always being added to and modified. It is a happy thought that if town planning had existed today there would be no Tower of London. There would be a mound of earth and some old stone walls. Today you can view the White Tower which was basically finished in 1097 and has on display a collection of armour and weapons.

Then there is the Bloody Tower where Richard III is supposed to have drowned the young prince Edward V and his younger brother in 1483 so he could claim the throne.

This is a piece of blatant propaganda that was written by William Shakespeare to curry favor with the monarchy. Richard III probably didn’t drown the princes and he certainly did not have a hump. For one alternative version read Josephine Tey’s ‘The Daughter of Time.’ Mark you, that is probably wrong as well but as no one knows the truth it is at least an acceptable theory.

Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned here from 1603 until 1616 during which time he wrote ‘The History of the World.’ He was more under house detention than actually imprisoned. He had two servants and his wife and his two sons sometimes came to stay with him.

He was released to lead an expedition to find the fictional El Dorado. He did not find it so when he returned he was executed as an encouragement to other explorers.

The moat became an open sewer until the Duke of Wellington, ever a man of direct action, had it drained.

The famous ravens do not hang around the tower of their own volition. They have their wings clipped. This does not lead to a friendly disposition and they are known to make quite scary attacks on visitors. Personally, I think they are dead souls haunting the castle but I am a Celt and ever superstitious.

One of the great attractions of the Tower are the Crown Jewels which are housed in the Duke of Wellington’s Barracks. Among them are The Royal Sceptre, containing the largest cut diamond in the world.

The Imperial State Crown, made in 1838 for the coronation of Queen Victoria and containing 3,000 precious stones including the second largest cut diamond in the world. And the Kohinoor diamond which is set in the crown made for the coronation of George VI’s queen, Elizabeth (the present Queen Mother) in 1937.

The people of India, from whom it was looted, would quite like it back. They are next in line to the Greeks who are waiting for the Elgin Marbles.

Nicking the Crown Jewels would be a great wheeze, although they would be very difficult to fence. In 1671 Colonel Thomas Blood managed to get the Jewels as far as the Wharf before he was arrested. He was punished with a Royal Pension which suggests the idea was that of Charles II, who at the time was running a bit short of the readies.

The few executions carried out at the Tower were on Tower Green. They have marked the spot where the block is supposed to have been with a bronze tablet. Unlike your normal public executions, which was the equivalent of the Cup Final, watching an execution at the Tower was for the very privileged.

So only the top pardon the pun miscreants were dramatically shortened in the Tower. The rest were carried out on Tower Hill, outside the Tower so that the thousands of spectators could have a better view.

One of the latest additions to the Tower is the History Gallery which was opened in 1978 for the Tower’s 900th Anniversary. It is enthralling although chilling. The Tower is an evil place.

They have the Ceremony of the Keys, which has been held at 10 o’clock every night for more than 700 years although there appears to have been one night in the Blitz of the second world war when the service was disrupted.

It is a most impressive ceremony if you can arrange to see it. This is not easy but well worth the effort.

Students Don’t Have To Be Poor

I am just wrapping up my studies as a university student. One thing that has plagued me for almost my entire university career is fear. Fear of graduating and still being poor. Fear of not being able to find a job. Fear of winding up just as poor as I have been for the past 4 or 5 years.

When I was starting university, I didn’t quite get it. But after two years, I started to realize that I was going to owe the government my life by the time I was done school. I was on pace to finish over $40,000 in debt from student loans. Combine the loan payment with a crappy job after graduating, and the fear of drowning intensified. You see, I was one of the many you desperately wanted an education and to succeed in life, but didn’t come from a family who could hand it to me on a platter; or even help with school expenses for that matter. I had to do everything on my own. So to compensate for the large amount of student loan I needed, I took on part time jobs that saw me working 20+ hours a week. My grades, free time, physical activity and my social life very quickly slipped away.

I would get SO frustrated about the way society worked! That here I was, a young man with high intelligence, putting so much effort into just trying to make life work, yet never having the time or money to do anything. I saw people that I know were way dumber than I was, but yet were making so much money!

Then, about a year ago I figured something out. The rich are rich because they want to be rich. The poor are poor because they think they can’t be rich. It’s all about drive, desire and being in control. Whenever you hold a job with a company or institution of some sort, most of your work is benefiting someone else. That’s why they hired you right?

So the next problem was: “how?” I knew that I had the desire, drive and brains to be rich (or at least well off) but I just didn’t know what to do with it. I knew I needed to work hard, but hard at what? Every legit business opportunity that I knew of was expensive. And I had NO money!

That’s when I went online and discovered the world of internet marketing. I of course I hadn’t heard of this by word of mouth, because no one benefits from the business by spreading it through word of mouth. Only on the internet can you find information on this lucrative market. My next question was “Am I too late?” Is the market already over saturated? Are the giants already too big? The answer is a big NO! Internet marketing is a baby. Imagine someone back in the 50s saying that the TV business is over-saturated, and there’s no point of getting into it anymore. How dumb would that be? The reality is the internet marketing world is just going to get bigger and more profitable. So get in now, and hopefully in many years, you’ll be one of the giants!

This is something that anyone can do. I am just finishing off my degree now, and will graduate with no debt. That’s right, I said no debt. I have made enough to pay off all of my loans, have a great car, buy a house, and best of all I have free time!!! I have averaged over $1000 a week for over 6 months now, and my income is constantly growing.
I guess the main message here is that students don’t have to be poor. They can be well off on their own; it’s just that hardly any of them know what to do. Going to university or college is a time to enjoy life, and have fun. It’s not a time to be stressed about paying rent or going into debt. Set yourself free. Take control of your future and your income. Check out internet marketing and see if it’s for you.

M Burton is a university student who has learned to make a lot of money online. He now publishes a free website at http://www.therichstudent.net that is dedicated to helping student leave behind student loans and part-time jobs, and make money from home.

Democratizing Marketing

How would you like to have the same marketing power that major cash-rich corporations have enjoyed for most of the past century?

How would you like to be able to appeal to people in your market for a fraction of the cost of “big league” radio, television and even newspaper advertising?

How would you like to see “David” level good ol’ “Goliath’s” marketing playing field so you can play on it too?

It’s called the democratizing of marketingTM, and it’s time has arrived.

The Internet and its advancing technology are significantly changing the way marketers reach consumers. In most cases, the cost to use these newer tools and tactics is within range for most independent innovators and entrepreneurs. The hardest part may be choosing which method to use.

Your first step is to familiarize yourself with the possibilities. Next, you will need to become more techno savvy or find a talented computer consultant. While the consultant can cost a fair amount, consider creative ways of working with such a person: Bartering or offering a percent of your profits for a limited amount of time are just two options. You also may need to consider enlisting the help of other professionals or talented amateurs looking for opportunities. Photographers, writers and videographers are a few that come to mind. Again, before you protest the potential cost, look for low-budget options in your area. Local community colleges are full of eager, talented students who are trained in the latest technologies and looking for ways to add some experience to their otherwise limited resumes.

To get you started, here are the key techniques you need to understand:

BLOGS: Since the first blog appeared on the internet in 1999, more than 4,000,000 are now on-line. The term blog is short for web log. A log, of course, is a ship captain’s “diary” or journal. Unlike the captain’s log, a blog is an interactive journal open for all to read.* Currently, politicians and journalists dominate the “blogosphere”, but as the use of blogs increases, marketers are embracing the advantages of reaching niche markets using this tool. Establishing a blog before you get your product to market can have several advantages for the independent innovator. You can:

• establisoh a web presence at little to minimal cost;

• invite comments and suggestions from readers;

• develop a following of early adopters who will be the first in line to purchase your product; and

• create interest while you are creating your product.

If you do decide to start a blog, be sure you have a clear offensive and defensive blog marketing strategy in place. One word of caution: protect your intellectual property by clearly copyrighting your blog. And, if you are an inventor, do not reveal your product concept or drawings until you have a provisional or full patent.

VLOGS: Add video to your blog and you’ve created a vlog (video blog). Vlogs offer some distinct advantages. You can upload videos of yourself speaking directly to your audience or videos which demonstrate how your product or service works. On the downside, vlogs can be more difficult to update regularly, may have a limited audience until more webcams find their way into homes, and if you’re the “star” of the video, you’ll need to do your hair and change from PJs to street clothes.

AUTOCASTING: This is a speech-synthesized version of a regular text blog. With the right technology, autocasts can be turned into podcasts (see next item).

PODCASTING: Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org) defines podcasting as “a method of publishing sound files to the internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed and receive new audio files automatically.” The term “podcast” was first used in 2004 and combines two concepts: iPods and broadcasting. Originally, this technology was most often used to sync its content to listeners’ portable music players like iPods. And, since this type of audio feed has the characteristics of radio broadcasting, a new term borrowed from each to describe this venue. A key thing to know is that you don’t need an iPod to listen to a podcast. Your computer or any digital audio player that has the necessary software can be used. Among the advantages of podcasting, programs are “time shifted” similar to what TiVo technology does for television viewers. Your target market can choose when, where and how they hear your message. In addition, you can transmit your messages worldwide without the need for expensive equipment.

NARROWCASTING: Narrowcasting is to television what podcasting is to radio. For a very small fraction of the cost it takes to produce a traditional broadcast or cable TV program, the increasing availability of high-speed internet connections is making it possible for the “little guy” to reach niche markets with free or fee-based programming. If an infomercial is part of your marketing strategy but not your current budget, narrowcasting may be the answer. You might also consider narrowcasting if your specialty program doesn’t interest the cable TV media.

To learn more about these options, log onto the net and do a Google search. Be sure to also visit on-line book sellers like Amazon (www.amazon.com) and Barnes and Nobel (www.barnesandnoble.com).

*It is possible to restrict access to a blog to only a specific group of people or to no one else other than the author.

How To Choose The Best Mortgage

A mortgage is a financial investment which involves a large amount of money, and it is important for you to do your research before deciding which company you want to go with. While many mortgage professionals are honest, they are looking for a large commission in helping you obtain a loan, and will often look out for the best interests of their job rather than you. Because of this it is important to take the steps necessary to insure you get the best possible deal.

How Is Your Credit?

The first thing you should do before applying for a mortgage loan is to review your credit report. Errors on your credit history can lead to an increase on the interest rate and cost of the mortgage. This is something you want to avoid. It is also important to understand the terms used in the agreement.

Which Type Of Mortgage?

You should know what type of mortgage you are applying for and how it fits in with your financial goals. Do you want a mortgage with an interest rate which fluctuates, or would you rather have one that is fixed?

Which Mortgage Company?

This is one of the questions you will need to answer when choosing which mortgage company you want to use. You should also know how much money you need to borrow and how much you can afford to pay each month. If there are certain things you don’t understand, you should consult a professional. There are many counseling services which are available to assist you. Like any financial expense which involves large amounts of money, you should shop around to find the best service.

Adding Up All The Costs

Many different companies will have a variety of different closing costs and interest rates. Your goal should be to find the company which offers the best service for the lowest price. Some lenders will try to estimate the cost of the closing, and this is something you don’t want. You want the exact prices, not estimates. If the company can’t give you the exact cost of all the fees up front, it would probably best for you to take your business some place else.

You Can Always Walk Away

It is also important to make sure you aren’t pressured into signing any agreements. Be wary of any lenders who try to get you to borrow more money than you need. If they try to pressure into getting the loan, this generally means they are more concerned with making money than helping you get the best mortgage. Companies like this should be avoided. If you don’t understand certain terms of the agreement, ask that a copy be made of it so that it can be reviewed with a lawyer before choosing to sign it.

Honesty Is The Only Way

Never put false information on your loan application, even if the loan officer urges you to do so. Loan officers who do this should be reported to the FTC. It is also a good idea to avoid purchasing credit insurance which is not necessary. If you feel that you need insurance, contact other companies other than your lender to see what deals they offer. At the closing you should make sure you carefully read the document before signing it. Don’t let anyone rush you into signing it without reading.

If you find that the terms of the agreement have changed, you should have not problem terminating the deal. You don’t want to sign a document which will put you in a financial strain later on. A mortgage is one of the most important parts of your personal finance, and you can’t afford to deal with a unethical lender. Making a mistake when choosing a mortgage can lead to years of financial headaches if you work with a lender who doesn’t have your best interests in mind.

Golf Training Aid

The sport of golf has grown so much over the past few years that it is hard to point out a golfer without seeing them play. Years ago the only people that played golf were the old me with the funny pants and bad fashion sense. I am not sure of the reason but the game of golf has taken off dramatically, and successfully brought the younger generations into the game. I am very happy about this because the game of golf needed a facelift. Now we have a whole new group of people that are learning what many of us already knew and that is that golf is a wonderful game that can teach patience, hard work and dedication. These are qualities that all humans should possess and at the same time the youngsters are learning those traits they are having fun. The thing is that golf is an easy game to learn the rules of and get out and try but a very difficult game to get good at. It is for this reason that the golf training aid market has boomed even more than it ever had before. There are hundred of golf training aids to choose from and a lot of them are really good and many of them are useless and a total waste of money. I have tried a ton of the golf training aids available and have a few that I am thoroughly impressed with and would recommend to everyone.

The first type of golf training aid that I think is excellent is golf dust training. For those of you that are not familiar with the terms golf dust training I can put it in a nutshell for you. Remember the term impact tape? Most people know what impact tape is and what it does. Impact tape allows the golfer to see what spot exactly the golf club hit the golf ball. The goal every swing is to hit the golf ball with the golf club in just the right spot allowing the club to do what it is intended to do. The tape was frankly a pain in the butt to use and set up. Golf dust training employs similar concepts but is an easy to use spray can of powder. The golfer simply pulls out a small spray can of golf dust and sprays it on the club face of the golf club. The golf dust training material goes on easily and allows you to get hundreds of swings off of one inexpensive can. Anyway, the golf dust allows you to easily see where the golf club hit the golf ball and lets you make the determination of what to change. If you alter something and swing the golf club again the golf dust training aid will let you see where the club hit the ball and you can determine by the hit whether the change you made was good or not and if it was good and is something you want to continue it gives you a representation of what to replicate.

I have tried so many golf training aids and have spent a lot of money on training aids of all sorts and it happens that the cheapest and most effective thing I have purchased is the golf dust training materials. Give it a shot and you will not be disappointed.

For more information about Golf Training Aids or Golf Dust Training in particular.
