Parenting 20-Something Kids - Still?

Aren’t we through with our parenting duties by the time our kids are 20-somethings? The truth is, we are still mom and dad but the change is in the way we do our jobs. What we used to do as parents of teen-agers no longer works in the transition years of becoming young adults. Our communication, the way we relate and speak, the ways we show love, even how much we give must be adjusted.

No longer can we give unsolicited advice and expect a positive response. No “Ok Johnny, go get your hair cut, buy a new suit, and then send in your resume to this company.” All those things may need to be done, but blatantly giving advice and instructing are no longer effective. Instead, we can gently ask questions like, “Son, what are you going to do next in your job search?” Or, you might say, “I think your idea to buy a new suit is a good one. If you’d like me to go along, let me know.” Suggesting and affirming are much more effective methods than a straight out “here’s how to do it.”

The key question to ask during the transition years into adulthood is this: “Will these words or this action promote a healthier relationship with my adult child? If we ask that question honestly whenever we are in doubt, we will discover which way to act.
During the teens, we helped our kids a lot. To guide them in towards greater independence now, we can begin doing less and let them do more for themselves. Part of becoming a responsible citizen is learning to accept personal obligations and to respect others. How do we do this? By saying no more often.

Some parents acknowledge saying “no” to their kids is tough. How do you all of a sudden start saying, “no, you can’t borrow the RV or the boat” or “no, I cannot baby-sit again this weekend?” Give an honest explanation. “We’re planning to keep this RV as our retirement getaway and we are limiting its use so that it isn’t worn out in three years.” Or, “I’m sorry I can’t sit. We made plans to have friends visit for the weekend.” If we are respectful, while honest and gentle, our children will understand more readily.

So yes, we are still active in our parenting role as our kids transition into adulthood. But it’s not just their transition. It’s ours too, and if we’ve done our job well, we can enjoy the mutual satisfaction of a friendship with our child for the rest of our lives.

Martha Pope Gorris, writer and speaker,is the mom of two adult kids. She saw the need for a change in tactics when their relationship became strained. After interviewing many parents, she wrote the book, Parenting 20-Something Kids:Recognizing Your Role As They Find Their Way.

Does your young adult child seem distant?
Does he call less often?
Seem sharp or hostile when you give advice?
Then it’s time to read this new book:

When your child shows signs of potty training readiness, it’s time to purchase some essential potty training items. There are many new products which can help to make potty training quick and easy for both you and your child. We have researched all of the latest and most effective potty training products.

Here, you’ll find a number of new potty training aids, such as the Tinkle Toonz musical potty or the anatomically correct drink & wet dolls that can be used with Dr. Phil’s potty training method. Be sure and browse through our selection of 2005 potty training books and DVDs, which provide a great introduction for both parents and children.

The important thing is to begin potty training with the right training products and information, to ensure your child has a positive experience from beginning to end. Don’t wait until you and your child are frustrated to buy a fun musical potty chair or read a bedtime potty training book.

After you have purchased the potty training products, begin introducing the idea of potty training by reading a book or watching a DVD. Place you child’s new potty chair in the bathroom and let him observe you going potty. Children learn by imitating other family members. This is a good time to teach him good hygiene by washing your hands after using the potty.

Be sure your child knows that he can come to you if he feels uncomfortable or afraid. He needs to know that you will always love him, even if he has accidents. For tips on handling accidents, read our article, Handling Accidents with Composure.

4d baby scans - www.babyultrasound.co.uk

The method know as 3d ultrasound is that can be used during early pregnancy, providing 3 d pictures of the fetus. Most times these ultrasound images are collated and joined together and made into a movie to created a “4d ultrasound”.

Three dimensional scanning works similarly to the usual ultrasound methods except that the ultrasound scanning waves are sent from multiple directions. The waves can be reflected back then captured to provide information to construct a 3 d image in in a similar manner to 3d movies. 3d ultasound scanning was first developed by olaf von ramm and stephen smith in america.

It is important to understand that sonologists everywhere always conjured three-dimensional images of the body in their minds while carrying out 2d scans. However, until recently it was impossible to do this kind of reconstruction on on info using ultrasound. With the advent of 4d baby scans for the first time allowed us a peek into the brain of a sonologist and hence letting us see the images on the ultrasound machine.

3d imaging should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. While there is no information of harm due to 3d ultrasound, its use in none essential situations needs to be undertaken with an understanding of the risks involved.
